A must have for any student of Biblical Hebrew

First, I would like to state that I have yet to read every last page of this book. Much of the material is condensed, and therefore, it's taking sometime for me to go through all the details and form my opinions. However, I would like to say that I have read most of this book, and so far everything that I have read is definately thought provoking, and insightful.

It has been well established by people like Max Muller that there is a petrified philosophy within language. Each people or nation has their own unique social psyche, and this will be reflected in the language(s) of their culture. The ancient Hebrews who wrote the Old Testament were no exception to this.

Bowman attempts in this book to analyze the Hebrew psyche, and understand how the ancient Hebrews understood both time, as well as action, and how they relates to one another. He quotes from numerous scholars in the field of Biblical Hebrew, and quotes numerous examples from the Old Testament to prove his points. He also attemps to explain and demonstrate how the Hebraic mindset is completely different from our own modern-western mindset.

One of the greatest examples in his book is his analysis of time. He demonstrates that the Greeks and other European peoples view time as being something linear, where as the Hebrews appeared to view time as being cyclical. His explanation on the time concept is VERY in-depth, and thought provoking. It will provide much insight for anyone who is willing to take the time to go through the material on the subject.

Im my honest opinion, I do not see how anyone can consider theirself to be an educated student of God's word, and more specifically an educated student of Biblical languages, and not understand the concepts and material presented in this book. I highly recommend it.

PS. I noted that someone stated in another review that Bowman calls Greek thought "static" and Hebraic thought "dynamic", and that this viewpoint is simplistic in the extreme. I would like to state that Bowman does state this at the very beginning of the first chapter, but goes in-depth to prove his points through out the rest of the book. Furthermore, Bowman also stipulated that Greek though only appears to be static, harmonious, and prudent in comparison to Hebrew though, which by comparison appears to be dynamic, vigorous, passionate and explosive in kind. Furthermore, Bowman stated that he regreted using the terms "dynamic" and "static" to label Hebrew and Greek thought since these are terms commonly used in the real of physics and mechanics, but he stated he used them because of how well their meanings are engrained into our psyche and langauge. Therefore, Bowman was not trying to label Greek thought with an insultive label, but rather only explaning things from a comparitive stand point, and if you read the book you will realize that Bowman does not attempt to insult the Greek psyche, but rather feels that the Greek/European mindset forms a complementary unity with Hebraic thought.

Many people who think they are students of the Word content themselves with vernacular translations and/or Strong's Meanings for the OT and NT original languages. Big mistake. Get this book to find out why you have to really delve into the original languages to see why God chose those languages for His Infallible Word. I honestly can't praise this book enough. Wish I had the money to buy thousands of copies of it!

Recommended for fans of Abercrombie, Ryan and Miles Cameron

Tony Healey is known for his popular sci-fi series Far From Home, and has now quite successfully branched out into the epic fantasy genre with this short but exciting and well written opening chapter of The Fallen Crown series. The Bloody North begins with an Outlaw Josey Wales vibe, this time with swords instead of pistols. It is a tale of revenge and the protagonist reminds you of The Bloody Nine from Joe Abercrombie's First Law series. He is forced to leave the peaceful life he has built after a career as a spectacularly successful mercenary, and has to return to his previously violent ways. It's a very fast paced story with a surprising ending, and the reveals of what's coming next has got me quite anxious for the sequel.

Healey does characterizations and descriptions well, and keeps you on the edge of your seat as the action comes fast and furiously. The dialogue is crisp and often humourous in spite of the deadly events that unfold.

I'm sure this is going to be a very well known epic fantasy series so you might as well get started now. This is one of those books you can't put down.

There's a worn-out looking Russell Crowe impersonator who looks like he's been through hell and back

Right out of the gate you know exactly what sort of book this is going to be. There's a worn-out looking Russell Crowe impersonator who looks like he's been through hell and back, there's the obligatory dark hood and sword combo and we've got 'blood' right there in the title.

I rolled my eyes through the first few chapters of butchery and chaos, thinking I knew exactly where this was heading and accepting it with a pinch of salt as the gore kept coming.

Then the book surprised me, because about a third of the way through we transition from the grimmest of the grimdark into something that vaguely resembles traditional fantasy.

We have a wise mentor, a love interest, a humorous animal companion. You know something? It actually improves the work too!

This is not a story of mindless slaughter and vengeance as the opening would dictate. Instead we have a bold but brief tale of personal redemption as a character transitions from being a bloody-minded killer of modern contemporary fantasy into something and someone much more palatable.

Upon completion of the book, author Tony Healey explains his influences and you can clearly see their effect on the story. The man is a fan of traditional fantasy in the purest sense and has only recently got his claws into the more modern 'grey' fantasy of dark brooding killers surrounded in treachery and decrepitude.

Healey's prose is solid, and he is no stranger to writing, with a number of science fiction books under his belt. Despite this The Bloody North is his debut in the fantasy genre and at times it shows.

The companion characters were hinted at but not fleshed out, the story itself, though well crafted, was too brief for my liking. There was room for expansion here, and this felt like a novella that had been padded out rather than an epic. I can only hope the next in the series is considerably larger and we get to learn more about the players within.

Healey name-drops Joe Abercrombie as having influenced him, and there is a lot of the Bloody Nine in protagonist Rowan Black. I'd recommend it to fans of the genre, but with the caveat that it's not going to quite measure up to the standards set by that which influenced it.

The Bloody North is a solid 4/5 and could well be the beginning of something larger to come, I look forward to the second book with keen interest.

Very readable, but not much depth and detail

I was browsing Kindle Unlimited, and the computerized Amazon Recommendations insisted that I give this one a try. So I obliged, partially because the description says "For fans of gritty, action-packed fantasy in the vein of George R. R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie". The George R. R. Martin part, that turned out to be only half true. Yes, it is in a fantasy-medieval world, yes there is some magic, yes it's not a rosy-Tolkien-esque story, but the similarities end there. There is not a lot of depth with the characters (don't really feel like we as readers got to know them as real people), not a complex story, not much in world building, the internal dialogue is rather unrealistic. On the other hand, the lack of depth and detail in the world and characters may be a plus for readers who like to fill-in-the-blanks on their own in stories that don't provide it..

Having said that, this is a very readable book. I finished it in a weekend. Even though it's only 240 pages, finishing a book quickly is a measurable metric in favor of a book - since I didn't have to read it or finish it. There is action, and fighting, and some mystery, moving at a fairly good pace. It is easy to read, the author avoids using unnecessarily obscure words just for the sake of author showmanship (not an uncommon trait with some fantasy writers, I'm looking at you Mr. Stephen R. Donaldson). Calling it pulpy would be a bit unfair to the book, but at the same time, it's nowhere near the level and complexity of GRRM type of work. Geekery plus for the author, the first draft was written on a Chromebook as revealed in the "Notes & Acknolwedgments" at the back of the book.

While it is post-Tolkien in subject matter (lots of gray characters in messed up situations), in other ways, it's still Tolkiensque (Kip, and powerful Wizard). Another ugh moment, there's one short chapter that is essentially bad erotica, a badly written sex scene [to be clear, I am not objecting to sex in books, but to a badly written sex scene].

Timing: this review is written about three months after book #1 was released, so I have no way of knowing how the rest of the series will turn out.

Not worth the money, Cambridge should be ashamed!

Well, I bought the Coursebook, Workbook and Teacher's guide thinking i will have a great tool to prepare my CIE students for the IGCSE exam because they were endorse by Cambridge and they use the same curriculum and syllabus sequence than the exam; the coursebook and the workbook are okay, but i rather use next year the glencoe series since have more tools, labs and exercises. But the Teacher's guide is a RIP OFF!... Is a CD with only 150MB full of PDF's and a mediocre interface with the answers of the problem on the coursebook and workbook. No objectives, goals, teaching tips, exams, quizes, lesson plan help, nothing!!! just A, B, C, D or E answers!... and it cost $44 bucks while the book is only $27!... avoid this CD!... Is going directly to my shelf of forgotten CDs.

About the Author
Olivier de La Grandville is Visiting Professor in the Management Science and Engineering Department at Stanford University, a position he has held since 1988. He was Professor of Economics at the University of Geneva between 1978 and 2007 and is the author of seven books on a wide range of topics in microeconomics, macroeconomics and finance.

MRCS, Surgical Sciences Examination, Orthpaedic Primary Basic Sciences Exam; for SET program (Australia)

I used this text for Orthpaedic Primary Basic Sciences Exam (OPBS), as it was the recommended text (Part 2 Australian Surgical Education and Training (SET) program).

I used the 10th Edition for the Surgical Sciences Examination (SSE), as it was the recommended text (Part 1 Australian Surgical Education and Training (SET) program)

I passed both exams first time using these texts (and the other recommended texts). 11th is an easier read, and can be knocked off a lot quicker than the 10th. It is better-written, but does not go into too much detail. Having said that, the bulk of the anatomy questions in the exam were taken, word-for-word, from Last's 10th Edition. After a post-exam dissection of the questions we could recall, we did not find all the answers in the 11th Edition, but all were in the 10th Edition.

The 10th descriptions are good, but it takes more time to digest; it is HARD reading!! I could only get through 20-25 pages a week while working full-time. The diagrams are, in general, confusing and not in colour (11th Edition has colour). Having said that, many questions in the exam were taken directly from these woeful black and white diagrams and sketches. The text needs to be read in conjunction with another pictorial anatomy text. I used Atlas of Human Anatomy: With Netteranatomy.com (Netter Basic Science) -fantastic companion text!

I personally prefer the 10th Edition. I only read the relevant chapters of 11th Edition (UL,LL, spine, pelvis, CNS) and i thought it was not enough detail.

Some of the questions can be from the very, very fine print. Apart from the CNS chapter, you need to have been through the whole book at least once. For example, one question in the October 2008 SSE was about lunate dislocations. I couldn't recall reading anything about it in Last's during my study. But a post-exam analysis revealed a single line, at the very end of the upper limb chapter, which contained the information required to answer the question (10th Edition only).

The 11th Edition is unlikely to be sufficient to answer all questions for the SSE and OPBS exams. I would recommend reading the 10th Edition only.

The Australian Orthopaedic Association has re-written 570 questions for the OPBS exam this year (2009). This means that the chances of repeat questions is close to zero. I counted zero repeat anatomy questions in the 200 that we were presented with for the Feb 2009 exam. As the exam shall be held twice (2009), once (2010), twice (2011) etc, the chances of repeat questions (if you are unlucky enough to have to sit it again), is low.

The pocketbook edition of Last's - don't buy it!

What has Chummy done?
The bible for anatomists - Last's - has suffered it's worse insult yet, following the editing done by the new author. What was once comprehensive, is now much shorter, lacking in detail, and inconsistant. Where does the right phrenic pierce the diaphragm? With or next to the IVC? Through the IVC foramen or piercing the tendon? Both appear in the text... muscles have gained new origins, and interosseus planes cease to exist!
Whilst maintaining an economical writing style, the only saviour to the text is the superb diagrams and pictures carried over from previous editions - each really does tell a story of a thousand words, which is useful, because the text doesn't.
If you can, find a copy of the ninth edition - the best yet!

From a medical students perspective

This textbook is one which I would recommend to any medical student learning anatomy,or any surgical trainee. It is very clear and concise in terms of text, and very detailed. The diagrams are a bit poor, but if you use it in conjunction with an anatomy atlas, you should have no problems. It's finest feature, and the one which has led me to rave about it so much is that it is very clear regarding the general principles of anatomy, and this has helped me no end to understand the subject fully - a definite prerequisate to knowing the subject. It is filled with aids to memory, and it is very good for those trying to learn the subject for the first time. Trust me, I am one.

About the Author
Angelo DeNisi is Albert Cohen Chair in Business Administration and Dean of the A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University. After receiving his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Purdue University, Dr. DeNisi taught at Kent State University, the University of South Carolina, Rutgers University, and Texas A&M University before coming to Tulane. His research interests include performance appraisal, expatriate management, and work experiences of persons with disabilities. Dr. DeNisi's research has been funded by government and private agencies, including the National Science Foundation, The Textile Manufacturers Institute, and the Army Research Institute. His work has been published in top journals in the field. He has also authored or co-authored four books, contributed to other books, and has spoken at numerous national and international meetings. Dr. DeNisi has served as President of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and President of the Academy of Management. He has also served as Chair of several SIOP committees and as Representative to the APA Council. He was the chair of both the OB and HR Divisions of the Academy of Management. His contributions to the profession have been recognized with awards from the Academy of Management, and The Academy of Management Executive. The SIOP has named him co-winner of the lifetime Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award. He has served on the editorial boards of AMJ, AMR, JAP, Journal of Management, and Journal of Organizational Behavior, and as Editor of the Academy of Management Journal. He is a Fellow of SIOP, the American Psychological Association, the Southern Management Association and the Academy of Management.

Ricky W. Griffin is Distinguished Professor of Management and the Blocker Chair in Business in Mays Business School at Texas A&M University. After receiving his PhD from the University of Houston in 1978, Dr. Griffin joined the faculty at the University of Missouri for three years before moving to Texas A&M in 1981. His research on task design and dysfunctional work behavior has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, the Journal of Management, and other outlets. He also served as Editor of the Journal of Management. Ricky has been Program Chair and Division Chair of the Organizational Behavior Division and Program Chair of the Research Methods Division of the Academy, Program Chair and President of the Southwest Academy of Management, and a member of the Board of the Southern Management Association. He is a fellow of both the Academy of Management and the Southern Management Association. Dr. Griffin has taught organizational behavior, human resource management, international management, and research methods at all levels and has won several teaching awards. He is a frequent speaker to executive audiences and is the author of several widely used textbooks. Dr. Griffin was Director of the Center for Human Resource Management at Texas A&M and just returned to the faculty at Mays after 11 years of full-time appointments as Management Department Head, Executive Associate Dean, and Interim Dean. His current research interests include workplace culture, managerial skills development, and decision making during times of crisis.

Visually Painful

Good textbooks are written in a way that important information is easily identifiable and depth is readily accessible. I used Williams' MGMT 7 book and expected this book to be comparable. Visually, it's clumsy and disorganized. Looking at the chapter title pages, they're atrocious. The color scheme is distracting, and the information is organized oddly. The infographics are sometimes useful, but very unpredictable. There are certain HR models that would make perfect sense as infographics, and aren't presented in them. Conversely, there are less important points that are shown in infographics. It doesn't quite make sense. Hopefully future revisions will take this into account.

The parallel coursemate material asks questions that aren't clearly answered in the text, and the coding on a number of the pages reveals XML errors that inhibit the correct usage of the material.

I cannot believe this is a used book! It is almost practically brand-new. No handwriting or marks anywhere. The access code works as well. I am currently using the book for my HRM class and as a college student who doesn't have hundreds of dollars to spend on ridiculous book prices, I am very glad that I get to purchased the book for much lesser price and unbeatable quality of the book. Thank you!

very good reference

I'm not a knot theorist or topologist at all, but I've found this useful as a source for basic results and for picking up some basic facts about knots and low-dimensional topology. It's widely cited, and for good reasons.

Missing many important recent (and even not-so-recent by now) topics, but perhaps this is not the right place for them anyway.

About the Author

Markus Testorf is currently an assistant professor at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College. He has written numerous articles on the use of phase-space optics and has taught optics courses throughout his professional career.

Bryan Hennelly is currently a research fellow at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He has written or coauthored numerous articles based on Wigner or phase-space optics relating to optical metrology systems and the sampling and numerical simulation of optical systems.

Jorge Ojeda-Casta�eda has been a visiting professor at the Institute of Optics in Madrid, the University of Valencia, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and the University James I in Spain. He is currently professor of applied optics, in the University of Guanajuato, M�xico. Dr. Ojeda-Casta�eda is a fellow of the SPIE and the OSA.
