Since then, historians have wrestled with the question of why the town was destroyed and by whom. Was it obliterated by a carpet bombing inflicted by the German Condor Legion as the Basques insist or torched by the Basques themselves who allegedly sought to throw the blame upon their Spanish Nationalist opponents? Although the destruction of Guernica occurred 78 years ago the incident still resonates throughout the Basque country. For Basques, Guernica is the wound in the heart that still separates them from their fellow countrymen who control Spain’s fortunes from Madrid. But for those who know little or nothing about the event, it is Pablo Picasso’s masterpiece they think of when Guernica is mentioned. His austere, black and grey painting has become the celebrated indictment of modern warfare, especially the bombing of civilian centers. As such, a copy of the painting guards the entrance to the United Nation’s Security Council chamber. Guernica was the first European town thoroughly leveled by incendiary and high explosive bombs which pointed the way to the frightful bombings of Warsaw, Rotterdam, Coventry, Hamburg, Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki during World War II. Guernica reminds us of the devastating potential of modern air power, which like Damocles’ sword still hangs ominously over a troubled and anxious world.

How to be organized and efficient in the workplace

The Personal Efficiency Program is exactly that, a program to help you get organized and stay organized so that you can get more done in less time. The overriding theme is to do things now and don't put them off. The book covers all the bases for organization from developing a routine, planning processes, following through, managing and maintaining. The area that it does not cover is the psychological factors in getting things done. For example, one of the books that I read noted that one of the problems with a "to-do" type list is that we tend to look at it and do the easiest or most fun things first. So, as a result our reward for completing one of the items on our "to-do" list is that we get a less desireable and more difficult task to do next. Rearranging the "to-do" list so that you do the most difficult and least fun things first you set yourself up for success because as a reward for doing the difficult item you get a less difficult item or more fun item to do. I know it is just playing games, but it does affect how well people get their "to-do" list completed. I wish that he had included research like that in the book in addition to all of the good ideas for organizing and keeping track of things.
This book is designed solely for the work environment and getting things organized and done at work. Still many of the items can be applied at home too. It is a good book and a good read with a program that works if you implement and practice it.

Practical, commonsense solutions to getting organised

This is a fantastic book - the best of its type I have read. Gleeson writes in a sane, sensible way about how to organise yourself to get more done. His solution? Do It Now. Before you say: "That's obvious" how many of you do it consistently? Not many, and the reason, from my experience, is that we are rarely organised to do it other than later!! Gleeson fills in the gaps by showing you how to physically organise yourself and your workspace so that you can put the Do It Now principle into regular and continuing operation. Trust me - this book is a lifesaver!!

This book really inspired me to clean up my act at work. I always say that I have better things to think about than where is the proper place to put a particular item...but I followed the instructions in this book and got everything in order and it has definitely made me more efficient, as well as improving my professional image. I've been following the other advice and in just the first week of putting it into practice I have received a lot of compliments from the people I work with/for, which has inspired me to work even more on improving my personal efficiency through this program!

From the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright to the rock gardens of Zen Buddhism, Coleman explores applied, fine, and folk arts in order to uncover points of coalescence between art and religion. Drawing from six living faiths (Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism), this book philosophically analyzes relations between art and religion in order to explain how the concepts "art," "beauty," "creativity," and "aesthetic experience" find their place or counterparts in religious discourse and experience. Coleman repeatedly shows that aesthetic ideas can serve as bridges to spiritual categories, as when he relates aesthetic bliss to "the peace that passes all understanding."

The author follows a three-fold approach; first, he examines ideas and motifs from religious classics in world literature, such as Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching and The Interior Castle by Teresa of Avila, in order to relate them to aesthetic phenomena. Second, he turns to the statements of artists, such as Leo Tolstoy, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Shih-t'ao, and Wassily Kandinsky, for themes and practices that have religious significance. Third, he analyzes and evaluates the writings of various theoreticians--philosophers, theologians, art critics, sociologists, and psychologists--on the relations between art and religion. Coleman demonstrates, for example, that Martin Buber's I-Thou relationship captures much that is central to art, creativity, and aesthetic experience as well as to religious life.

Among the themes that receive sustained treatment are: the varieties of union in art and religion, the child as a paradigm for artists and saints, and creativity as essential to religion. Finally, the author critically weighs proposed distinctions between art and religion and between the broader categories of the aesthetic and the spiritual, rejecting some and showing how others are compatible with his proposal that the aesthetic and the spiritual are cognate categories.

Earle J. Coleman is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. He is the author of several books, including Varieties of Aesthetic Experience and Philosophy of Painting by Shih-t'ao.

Articulate and Mind-Opening

I rented this book from my university's library, intrigued by the title. Being both a highly passionate artist and a deeply spiritual person, I was immediately interested. I have always suspected that there were relations between artistic and religious acts, and author Earle J. Coleman expands on this theory, with a lot of illuminating, penetrating insight. He discusses that both art and religion involve a communication and inspiration from a divine source (possibly the same source) and that all artists and theologists should strive to remain in touch with that divinity in many ways, such as expressing your inner child (in order to be open, faithful, and nonjudgmental), being a receptive vessel for inspiration and creative energy, and setting aside shallow ego desires in order to be fully immersed in the creative/spiritual process. Coleman states that while he does not believe that art and religion are completely intertwined, he believes that the two subjects intermingle in many ways like the creative art and fables found in religions and churches, and the transformative, cathartic power of creative work. Reading this article renewed my passion and faith in my craft, as well as the enigmatic Higher Power that works through me in order to express that craft.
