Out-of-date, poorly written, with a large number of errors.

I was excited for the publication of this book. I have been an off-and-on Linux user since 2008, and seeing a reasonably-priced Dummies book published within the last few weeks that appeared to cover some more advanced aspects of the Linux system made my heart sing with joy.

This book, however, is massively out of date, and appears to have been sloppily edited. I'm only a few chapters in and here are a few of the things that I noticed right out of the box:
> Dulaney (author) recommends purchasing commercial software on your Windows computer in order to partition your hard drive, or using the "QTParted" (long-since renamed to the "KDE Partition Manager"; "GParted" is the one that 99% of distros has come with since 2009) available on the "few distributions available with a live CD" (EVERY single major distribution has a live CD). This is also ludicrous since the installer for EVERY SINGLE MAJOR LINUX DISTRIBUTION contains a partition manager that will set up the partitions for you - and does a good job. In fact, almost every major distribution has had an easy-to-use (not to mention, free) partition manager built into their installers since before 2008 - how out-of-date is this book?
> Dulaney doesn't even mention Linux Mint, the most popular distribution of Linux. Seriously?
> Dulaney says that Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop, which it hasn't since 2009.
> Dulaney talks about the limited "online support" available for most mainstream distros. One has to assume he's referring to the online documentation pages, since every major distribution has a well-maintained support site (such as askubuntu.com) which he fails to point out to his readers.
> Dulaney doesn't even mention any of the major issues that Linux users will face in 2014, such as setting up a dual-boot with Windows 8 (which is extraordinarily difficult, especially considering the uEFI module), support for hiDPI screens (FHD and above), support for proprietary software (such as flash - necessary for a lot of web browsing, including YouTube), and support for newer hardware that might require proprietary drivers. In fact, he doesn't even include useful information to help one decide between distributions - just a bit about the history of the various companies. Somehow he manages to mention Ubuntu without mentioning Mark Shuttleworth or Canonical - a big no-no in my opinion.
> Dulaney recommends Xandros, a distribution that hasn't had a release since 2006.
> Dulaney claims that you're going to have to decide between GNOME and KDE, despite the fact that both Unity and Cinnamon are more popular than either GNOME or KDE, with MATE, XFCE, LXDE, SoS, and many other desktop environments becoming increasingly popular.

That's just a few of the biggest issues I noticed in the first two chapters alone. There's also a lot of inconsistencies in his writing; sometimes he will do something like recommend using "QTParted", then later in the chapter tell you that you should use "GParted" without acknowledging the discrepancy. Perhaps the rest of the book will change my mind, but from what I've seen so far, this book does not provide a remotely useful guide to Linux in 2014.

Doesn't teach squat about using Linux

If you want to know Linux architecture and history, fine. If you're looking to actually learn how to use it, don't bother. Worst For Dummies book I've ever purchased. Already turned it in as a used book at the local used bookseller for credit.

NOT for Dummies or Beginners !

This is not a book for beginners. Tries to do too much in too little space. No beginner is going to be seeking Linux Certification! Worse, most shoppers would be seeking a book FOR BEGINNERS, and this isn't going to be helpful. It falls into the typical Linux fault of using jargon that new users won't understand, of skipping basics and jumping to sophisticated concepts too soon, and of sloppy editing. Overall, a disappointment.
On the other hand, for someone who has used Linux and tweaked, loaded, installed, uninstalled and done other reading on this operating system, and (successfully) used Wine or a Virtual Machine with their Linux - then, maybe, this would fill in some blanks. But it really leaves many questions unanswered. And, as noted by others, it skips Linux Mint entirely. This is Copyright 2014, and the "For Dummies" brand is harmed when John Wiley & Sons publishers allows this under their brand name.

not too bad

I thought this book might be a bit cheesy and too easy for the classroom application I had in mind, but to my surprise a good part of the book will work. Some of the "photoshopped" parts are a bit too easy and ridiculous. I am using it to expose my photo classes to some famous works of art and to develop their critical eye to spotting differences.

Disappointed

I enjoy the Life puzzle books and have bought all of them to date. Thought I'd try something a bit different, but have to say I was disappointed in this. The photography is beautiful, but because they are from "older" pictures (black and white), it tends to get boring. I prefer the colorful pictures in Life, and Life does have a classics section if you want the black and white pictures.

I am disappointed in the pictures in this book. Most of the pictures are black and white, too dark too study and find differences. I probably won't be able to do any of the puzzles in this book, except for a few.

Useful, Practical, Fascinating Book by A Well-Known Authority and Teacher

This is the Second Edition of a classic work on solving differential equations numerically. The well-known author and teacher has published pathfinding papers on this topic from the early 1960's to the present. The "Butcher Tableau" is the standard short-hand display for Runge-Kutta methods.

The book sets the table by describing a set of standard problems for numerical solution. Then, as new methods are described their efficacy on the standard problems is graphed and tabulated.

Explicit and implicit Runge-Kutta Methods, Linear Multistep Methods, Taylor Series Methods and General Linear Methods are thoroughly described from the viewpoint of accuracy and stability. Symplectic Runge-Kutta methods, 'Almost' Runge-Kutta methods and Inverse Runge-Kutta Methods are among the additional covered topics of current interest.

Practical issues for the implementer of algorithms based on these methods, such as error estimation and step-size control, are well-covered. References to the topic's literature are also outstanding.

To use the book, a background in calculus and numerical analysis is essential.

Current topics in this field are well-represented. The author has taught many of the present class of researchers, and the clarity of a great teacher is apparent.

This book is outstanding. Anyone trying to get into the how's and why's of numerical ODE methods should definitely start here. Great review of Runge-Kutta methods, and I really like the introduction to linear multistep methods. Great stuff.

He is the author of the embedded systems development book titled Real-Time Concepts for Embedded Systems published in April 2003. Tatuya Jinmei Ph.D. is a research scientist at Corporate Research & Development Center, Toshiba Corporation. He had been a core developer of the KAME project since the launch of the project through its conclusion. In 2003, he received the Ph.D. degree from Keio University, Japan, based on his work at KAME. Keiichi Shima is a senior researcher at Internet Initiative Japan Inc. He was a core developer of the KAME project from 2001 to the end of the project and developed Mobile IPv6/NEMO Basic Support protocol

About the Author

An essential for networking developers and architects

This book is an essential addition to your library if you want to understand IPv6 networking beyond just the surface. Initially the book will serve as a detailed introduction to IPv6, but the biggest value is later when it serves as a trusted reference book in your networking library. As the authors intended, it will serve as an implementation reference for IPv6 like how the Stevens' book on TCP/IP from the nineties served as the bible for TCP/IP (and IPv4) implementations. I still go back to that book when I want to understand some aspects of the BSD TCP/IP stack (which is the ancestor to many contemporary TCP/IP stacks.) I expect to use this book as a reference in the same way for many years as we start migrating to IPv6.

Who better to write an implementation-oriented book on IPv6 than the developers involved in the KAME project and the lead architect on the IPv6 stack of VxWorks? The KAME developers wrote their code in close sync with the evolution of IPv6 in the IETF and were privy to not just the authoring of IPv6 RFCs but the hundreds of invaluable side discussions that typically happen at the IETF conferences and mailing lists. When reading the book you can make this out easily from the interesting insights the authors provide on various aspects of the IPv6 protocols design as well as reasons for some implementation choices versus others. I also like the several places in the book where the IPv6 design is compared and contrasted with similar aspects of IPv4. This is very useful since most of us that buy this book have been working for a while with IPv4 and understand its design.

The book assumes that the reader is reasonably familiar with TCP/IP IPv4 and BSD Sockets programming. If you're already familiar with IPv6 then you can jump straight into almost any place in the book. If you are new to IPv6 and want to use this book initially as an introduction I suggest that you read the book in two passes. In the first pass you should read all the chapters, stopping in each chapter before the "Code Introduction" subsection. This first pass will give you an introduction to the IPv6 protocol, IPv6 addressing, ICMPv6, Neighbor Discovery (ND), Autoconfiguration and the Sockets API for IPv6 - these constitute the core of what you need to know about IPv6. You could stop with this pass and then use the rest of the book as a reference. Or you could keep going and do a second pass of all chapters and go through the code sections. This second pass will now be much easier since you now have a good overall grasp of IPv6.

When it comes to the code walk-throughs and explanation of data structures I found that the authors have done a very meticulous job. Every interesting line of code is explained in detail and as I mentioned before there are many useful insights into "why's of the code" rather than dry comments on what it does. The book also comes with 2 CDROMs which contain all the referenced KAME source code and the FreeBSD 4.8 release. However, if you're like me and want only the latest/greatest release, I suggest going to the latest release of your choice of a BSD-based OS and browsing those source files instead. As a Mac guy I went with the latest kernel sources for Mac OS X 10.4. The Mac OS X Darwin kernel (a.k.a. XNU, not to be confused with Xinu OS from Comers' TCP/IP books) is a derivative of BSD built on top of a MACH microkernel. The IPv6 stack in Darwin/XNU is a port from KAME. I found it relative easy to follow the code explanations in the book with the XNU version of the IPv6 code. As you would expect, the line numbers from the book don't match the XNU line numbers, but the filenames are identical and it is relatively easy to find the corresponding code snippets referenced in the book. There were definitely some differences between the two code trees, but I did not run into anything that was substantially different in the sections I read.

All in all this book is a great addition to my networking library and I am looking forward to the second book from the authors that plans to cover the ancillary protocols to IPv6 such as IPv6 routing, multicasting, DNS, etc.

"TCP/IP illustrated volume 2" for IPv6!

This book is written in the same style as Stevens' TCP/IP Illustrated Volume

II and serves as The replacement of Stevens' books for IPv6. This book blends

in-depth discussion of the IPv6 protocols and standards with line-by-line

code annotation and design digest of the KAME implementation. As the WIDE

project board member and the original core KAME developer, I approve the

technical accuracy of this book and certify the content of this book

represents the KAME implementation well. I fully endorse this book and

personally recommend it to every programmer as the IPv6 network programming

book.

Along the way, it takes us to India and Australia, Columbia and China, Russia, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. And it proves that, in order to solve ever more complicated cases, science must always stay one step ahead of the killer.

Nigel McCrery has had an interesting career - an ex-policeman turned screenwriter, he's the man behind such successful TV dramas as Silent Witness and New Tricks, and has also written several crime novels. All of which makes him perhaps the ideal person to write a book on the history of the contribution of forensic science to crime detection.

Each chapter looks at a different aspect of forensics - ballistics, blood, fingerprinting, the human body, DNA etc. McCrery introduces us to the scientists and detectives who developed the techniques and tests that gradually led to the current state of play where forensics is one of the major planks of detection. In less skilled hands, this could be a very dry subject indeed, but McCrery writes flowingly and interestingly, making the people come to life and explaining the science in a way that is easy to understand.

What makes the book most interesting is that McCrery tells the stories of the true crimes that were the earliest to be solved by each individual technique, and he ranges widely across the world to do so. He takes us back in time to the earliest days of detection to give a picture of the primitive, sometimes barbaric, methods that were used prior to the development of scientific methods - so we learn, for instance, of the suspect forced to share a bed with the bodies of his supposed victims to see if guilt would produce a confession. Or how about the early method of identifying an unknown victim by sticking the head on a pole and displaying it in public?

McCrery uses a chronological approach to telling his story, so in the chapter on the gun, for instance, we learn about its history from its earliest appearance as a Chinese 'fire-lance', through the invention of flintlocks and on to revolvers. At each step he explains what methods could be used to match a gun with its bullets and, while I must admit my lack of knowledge about 'rifling' has never kept me awake, I found it unexpectedly interesting. On the subject of blood, McCrery takes us back to the days when there was no test to differentiate between human and animal blood, and then leads us through the development of blood-typing and the increasingly sophisticated tests that could be used to match samples. The chapter on poison reveals, amongst other things, why it's often thought of as a 'woman's weapon' as he tells us about the history of women in the days of forced marriages forming little societies to get rid of their unwanted husbands.

And finally, McCrery ends with a look at DNA and how this has revolutionised detection, both as a means of catching the guilty but equally importantly of clearing the innocent. The cases he uses throughout as examples are interesting and well-told, though as we reached closer to the present, I felt a little uncomfortable with the thought of using murders still within living memory as part of what is really an entertainment. However, he does it with a good deal of sensitivity and due respect for both victims and their families.

A fascinating and informative book that is also well-written and enjoyable. Recommended to anyone with an interest in murder...

Silent Witnesses is an easily accessible and well-written primer on the history of forensic science. It reads like a work of fiction but offers the reader a clear history of many of the most important advances in forensic investigative techniques. The topics are covered in chapters titled: Identity, Ballistics, Blood, Trace Evidence, The Body, Poisons, and DNA. Each subject is reviewed chronologically and numerous milestone cases in the development and growth of forensic science are presented.

For example, in the Identity chapter, the war between Alphonse Bertillon and his anthropometric ID system known as “bertillonage” and those who favored fingerprinting as the gold standard for identification of an individual is documented. In Blood, the development of the ABO blood typing system is well presented as well as the methods for identifying a stain as blood and determining that it is human and not animal, both extremely important in crimes where blood is shed. In Trace Evidence, the discovery and development of the microscope as a forensic tool is covered in great detail. Poisons have been around almost as long as civilization and in the chapter Poisons this long and sordid history is chronicled as are the steps in the creation of the fascinating field of forensic toxicology, including the development of the famous Marsh and Reinsch tests for identifying the “inheritance powder” arsenic.

Perhaps the most enjoyable parts of Silent Witnesses are the discussions of famous cases that helped develop forensic science as a viable entity. Silent Witnesses opens with the famous Colin Pitchfork case—-the first time DNA profiling was used to solve a murder. Other seminal cases include: the Francisca Rojas case (the first time fingerprints solved a murder); the St. Valentine’s Day massacre (which put firearm’s examinations in the public eye); the Sam Sheppard case (where blood spatter analysis proved crucial in the retrial of the famous physician); the Parkman-Webster case (one of the first to employ dental examinations to identify a partially destroyed corpse); the Murder at the Crumbles case (involving the great medical detective Sir Bernard Spilsbury and leading to the creation of the police officer’s “murder bag”); the more modern “radiological” poisoning of Russian dissident Alexander Litvinenko; and many more that will keep the reader enthralled.

Silent Witnesses is a delightful journey through the evolution of forensic science and is a very useful introduction to the subject. Highly recommended.

Most of the cases and history can be found in shows like "catching killers" and "forensic files", but the historical detail, and scientific information is refreshing. Great perspective and charmingly well-written. A great intro or brush-up on the field.
