The best educational python book so far

I'm very passionate about the educational aspects of programming and because of that I got interested in Learning Python by Fabrizio Romano. For a long time I was looking for a single book which could fulfil the following requirements:

- introduce programming concepts in a very clear but not too simple way so that the reader would feel that his time spent with the material is highly optimized and there are no over-explained ideas
- focus on the practical aspects therefore showing how really a given language is used (by really of course I mean professionally) and not merely being a reference to the whole richness of modern programming languages. The reference type of books are in my opinion very harmful since way too often they are leaving the reader with enormous set of possible permutations of language constructs that ultimately make the user more lost than before reading the book.
- showing that programming is highly creative and collaborative activity.

Fulfilling all above conditions requires from the author an incredible sense of balance and deep understanding of readers mind, skills and motivation and in my opinion the author of Learning Python achieved that.

I'm quite an advanced Python developer with few years of professional experience and initially I was only planning to read few chapters (advance ones) of Learning Python but because of some intuition I started to read from the first chapter and after few minutes I was hooked! I loved it! Here are some of things I've noted down while reading the book:

- the author used very light conversational style which makes the text very easy to read and follow
- the idea of using inline comments in the code snippets making them a natural almost organic continuation of the main text is ingenious!
- incredible amount of side threads that introduce certain concepts which will be fully outlined later in book but enable one to start becoming comfortable with way earlier.
- chapters are organized in a brilliant fashion not using some artificial and highly theoretical categorisation but rather the practicality and intuition.
- projects (especially the one in last chapter) are highly practical and could be easily used in real world products.

I think that the best way to describe Learning Python is to compare it to a very good book for studying one of the foreign languages, a book which does not focus on every single aspect of a language by overflowing the reader with tables of grammar rules, declinations and super boring and useless examples but rather showing beauty, richness, smartness and adaptivity of certain ideas and concepts making the language alive and such a powerful tool to communicate, create poetry and literally construct any yet unthinkable thoughts.

Quite accidentally while reading Learning Python I've found a quote by Antoine de Saint-Exup�ry which in a prefect way describes what I really tried to convey above:

And without any doubts Fabrizio Romano and his Learning Python taught me how to long for the endless immensity and richness of the world of Python.

with good examples and funny analogies when forced toexplain things

This is a very impressive work. Bought the book and read it very quickly, it gave me a very bright idea of what python can do and cleared me out of some subtle doubts about this language. I was used to do some python projects, with Django framework, but I never had the opportunity to really know this astounding language, and, I must say, in this warming way.

Yes, that’s what I felt the most important in this book. The writer seems to feel tied to the reader in a mission to catch always his attention, with good examples and funny analogies when forced toexplain things. I felt reading this book something like you’re in a classroom with a teacher that tries to make you think but at the same time he must avoid you to get asleep or watch out of the window.

Maybe I read a very overly complicated Groovy book before this, but I appreciated so much the effort to explain in the simplest way possible a lot of concepts, and made me feel at ease with every single page. Furthermore most of chapters aim to giving you a good knowledge about best practices both in design phase and implementation phase, alerting from every possible mistake you should avoid from the very beginning of your learning.

In the end I think it’s a very solid base to learn the language or to understand better some aspects of django or even other frameworks. Chapters from 9 to 11 are my favorites because they inspect every kind of things you can do with Python and Django about Web and Data Analysis, and they revealed to be really helpful for almost every project I got involved.

Excellent introduction to Python and broader programming concepts.

As a new Python developer myself I was super excited to find out that Fabrizio will be publishing a book on the subject.

Coming from a statically typed languages background, I found dynamic languages quite refreshing. I had done medium size project in Ruby and now found myself in a Python shop. Python is one of these languages that you can hit the ground running with very quickly, but to appreciate it in full and to understand its philosophy you need to dig dipper. This book is for everyone who wants to do so.

There are many conventions when writing Python which are considered "Pythonic". You'll be able to learn about them by following simple examples and straightforward explanations provided by the author. There are many hidden features and gotchas in Python that this book will point you to so you can maximize efficiency and elegance of your work. Some of more fun that I found are: negative indexing, using else with 'for' and 'while' loops, LEGB rule and so on....

On top of this, not much prior programming knowledge is expected from the reader (although some would be preferable since samples getting complicated quickly)

Overall I enjoyed reading this book and would highly recommend it to anyone.

TOTALLY GET THIS BOOK!

While I was getting ready to prepare for my first ap exam of the week, my friend had recommended that I purchased this review book. However after getting my book, I was so amazed at how useful and compact it was. The book it self was somewhat thick but it absolutely had everything you needed for that exam. I studied the night before by reading this book and after I finished reading it, I felt very confident! I walked into that test room and breezed right through the test. Although I have not received my scores yet, I highly recommend using this book for a refresher before the exam but in addition to also using the Princeton Review Book: Cracking the Ap Enviromental Science Exam. The review test in that book literally had a third of the same questions I saw in that exam. I highly recommed buying both books.

Great tips

I love this book! I wish I had had it as a guide for my students sooner.
The tips are wonderful, the content is current and well-explained.
It confirmed for me that I covered the important topics this year, even if my students did not do the work necessary to actually learn the material. If they all had Kindles or iPads or some such device, downloading this book is a great value.

The content is well presented and pared down to the bare minimum. But there are over 250 pages so the author does not skimp on details, either. The tips on the different types of questions are very helpful and comprehensive.

Crash Course always pulls through. Another brilliant book!

This book summarizes everything you need to know and is done in a way that doesn't confuse you with big words or stress you out. It explains every answer to leave you with confidence after reading.

Essential reference for world cruisers -- and for those who want to charter around the world

I've always carried and used Jimmy Cornell's books aboard my boat ever since I bought my first copy of World Cruising Routes in the 1980's to help us plan as we began cruising on our sailboat. Together his books serve as sort of a master cruising guide to the world: World Cruising Routes tells you how to get to wherever you want to sail and World Cruising Destinations gives you the information you will need once you get there.

World Cruising Destinations is a beautiful book. The photos are gorgeous, and the layout makes it fun to just pick up the book and read ... about Croatia, Spain, Cuba, the Caribbean, the Falklands, Antarctica, or any other of the 184 sailing destinations that the book covers. World Cruising Destinations gives you the WHOLE world through a boater's eye, and of course, not just any boater's eye, but with Jimmy Cornell's decades of experience. It includes for each destination such information as country profile, map, climate, facilities, formalities, cruising guides, charter operations -- and best of all, an understanding of where and how you cruise that area. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to sail or charter anywhere in the world, well now you can find out. World Cruising Destinations is indispensable if you are planning to sail to foreign countries aboard your own boat. But it is equally valuable if you are interesting in chartering in interesting areas of the world - Destinations will give you the information to charter in the most popular chartering areas, but also introduce you to appealing areas you would otherwise perhaps never know about.

This is a concise easy to read synopsis of major cruising destinations. While we are moving into an ever more electronic age for access of all content, I think it is important that hard copy references remain a viable source of information in case of the inevitable electronic failures. I have checked World Cruising Destinations against several places I have visited and found to be concise and accurate. I am a firm believer that you can never have too many references when wandering into a new port of call. This book meets my needs and I would recommend it to cruisers. It is worth the investment.

World Cruising Destinations. While World Cruising Routes helps the sailors to reach their destination, they need information on their actual landfall. For this purpose Jimmy Cornell compiled twenty years ago the World Cruising Handbook providing the reader with essential information on the maritime nations of the world. To keep the information updated the Handbook mutated into [...] in 2000 and the site became popular at once. The World Cruising Destinations now "attempts to add a dash of spice to such factual data", as the author puts it. The book covers 184 countries, half of which Jimmy himself has sailed to. The layout of the book is beautiful, the photographs alluring, and it contains all the basic information a sailor needs. This excellent guidebook is welcome both for those who arrive to the destination by own boat and for those who want to charter. The book makes up a gap, as local cruising guides are not often available in English.

Alan D. Evans, M.S., CPA

Alan Evans is currently a faculty member at Moore College of Art and Design and Montgomery County Community College teaching a variety of computer science and business courses.� He holds a B.S. in Accounting from Rider University and an M.S. in Information Systems from Drexel University, and he is a certified public accountant.� After a successful career in business, Alan finally realized his true calling was education.� He has been teaching at the college level since 2000.� Alan enjoys giving presentations at technical conferences and meets regularly with computer science faculty and administrators from other colleges to discuss curriculum development and new methods of engaging students.�

Kendall E. Martin, Ph.D.
Kendall has been teaching since 1988 at a number of institutions, including Villanova University, DeSales University, Arcadia University, Ursinus College, County College of Morris, and Montgomery County Community College, at both the undergraduate and master’s degree level. Kendall’s education includes a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. She has industrial experience in research and development environments (AT&T Bell Laboratories) as well as experience from several start-up technology firms. At Ursinus College, Kendall developed a successful faculty training program for distance education instructors, and she makes conference presentations during the year.

Mary Anne Poatsy, MBA, CFP
Mary Anne is an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. Mary Anne holds a B.A. in Psychology and Elementary Education from Mount Holyoke College and an MBA in Finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mary Anne has more than nine years of educational experience, ranging from elementary and secondary education to Montgomery County Community College, Muhlenberg College, and Bucks County Community College, as well as training in the professional environment. Prior to teaching, Mary Anne was a vice president at Shearson Lehman Hutton in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking department.

Horrible start to learning technology.

My wife is taking a college course based around this book. Im a systems engineer so my wife has been asking me many questions about the information in this book. I cannot recall raging so hard at a book in my life. The terms and concept in this book are out of this world inaccurate and do not mirror real world IT whatsoever. If you need this book for some class for a degree I'm sorry. This book will do nothing but make you sound incompetent and incorrect if you ever attempt to use this information in front of an IT professional. If you are a college professor please rethink using this book for your students. You are setting them up for failure.

Required for Class, Couldn't read online

This was a required textbook for a class I was in. I love the ability to get my books digitally, but was frustrated to find that this was only able to be read on the Kindle Fire. I bought a Fire with a small screen to save space, knowing that I could read books on my laptop when I needed to view the full pages. This feature wasn't available to me in the digital purchase. Had I known this in advance I would have most likely purchased a hard copy. It left me very frustrated over the course of my semester.

About the Author
Chris Leben is a ten-year veteran of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. While growing up in Portland, Oregon, he became interested in mixed martial arts at an early age. After being a participant on first season of The Ultimate Fighter, Leben went on to put together a 22–12 record and become a fan favorite before retiring in January 2014. Leben currently lives and coaches MMA fighters in San Diego, California.

Daniel J. Patinkin is a Chicago-born writer and businessman. His unique career has spanned the real estate, finance, education, and entertainment industries. He earned a BA in English and history from Indiana University and an MFA in producing from the University of Southern California. The Crippler is his first book. He lives in New York City.

another dull expose'.

What a surprise!!! Heard about this book while eavesdropping in the gym..there was a lot of buzz about "The Crippler ". I went to Amazon and
read about it and promptly ordered one for myself. I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I expected it to be about MMA as blood sport, i.e. another dull expose'....NO, it was more about the humanity (and sometimes the endured inhumanity) of this fighter's life--his struggles, his addictions, his triumphs, his hard-to-believe-but-true life experiences--it is about more than just a jaw-breaking uppercut or a kick-to- the-head
(although there are many of those), its a great read. Prepare to be "knocked out" by this AWESOME book.

Once again Dan Patinkin brings the noise AND the funk with his cagetastic tale of Chris Leben's unreal life experiences as an MMA fighter and beyond. If you like MMA and you like words on a page, "The Crippler" belongs in your life.

What a great book

Wow. This book was honest, revelatory, fun and impossible to put down. I learned a lot not just about Chris Leben and MMA but about the internal life of someone from incredibly adverse circumstances. I have the feeling that people will see more of themselves in Chris's story than they'd care to admit, though in Chris's case the demons are born of things that would derail most people before they got started. So many of the themes of the book are universal - trying to transcend one's past to build relationships, external competition vs. internal demons, the individual vs. the corporation, how the professional and the personal are intertwined. It's rare that a book is so unflinching in its look at a person's real life. It's like a window into someone's soul. Keep fighting Chris Leben.
