The #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestseller that Gregory Maguire (Wicked and After Alice) calls "full of heart."
Long before she was the terror of Wonderland, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.
Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
In her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Gr 8 Up—The author's best fantasy yet. In her inspired reimagining of Lewis Carroll's inimitable adventures in Wonderland, Meyer has explored the world that existed before Alice fell down the rabbit hole. All Lady Catherine wants to do is open her own bakery with the help of her maid. She has no wish to wear beautiful dresses or go to balls, and she certainly has no desire whatsoever to marry the good-natured, bumbling, childlike king. But that seems to be her fate until she meets the king's handsome and mysterious new joker, Jest. Although his mission is to steal Lady Catherine's heart and take it to the White Queen, who would use it to overcome the enemies of her realm, he falls in love with her instead. Employing all the best aspects of Carroll's book—the White Rabbit, croquet with hedgehogs and flamingos, suits of cards, and the Jabberwocky—Meyer has woven all the elements of darkness and light, fate and free will, and love and hatred into an unforgettable story of the evolution of the Red Queen from a young girl who dreamed of true love and freedom to a madwoman best remembered for the phrase Off with his head. VERDICT If you only read one fractured fairy tale this year, make it Heartless. A must-have title.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

No one gets a happy ending.
By Carina
I loved this book. It gives you the famous quotes from Alice in wonderland like "How is a raven like a writing desk", "Off with its head", and "I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast" to name a few. But the entire story is completely different with just one small mention about Alice the rest of the story is about how the Queen of Hearts became who she is. And it is not a happy ending story. I don't think anyone is happy at the end of this story.
Marissa Meyer describes everything so well that I believe that I am in Hearts myself. Or that I just have watched the movie Heartless because it was so vivid in my imagination because she describes everything so well.
You also have all the normal characters of from Alice in Wonderland like the White Rabbit, The mad hatter, the Cheshire cat and the caterpillar. This story doesn't just so how the Queen of Hearts became the way she is but also how the Mad hatter became mad. There are scenes pulled out of Alice in Wonderland but are different to fit this book. Like the croquet with the hedgehogs and the flamingos.
At the end of the story, you feel bad for all the characters even the loopy King of Hearts. Even though I know how it is going to end. That Catherine will become the Queen of Hearts, I find myself hoping and hoping that the ending would end differently. That Catherine will get her happy ending. But this story is all about how Catherine became the Queen of Hearts, and it is not a happy story.

Amazing Prequel Story About The Queen of Hearts!
By Kristofer VanDaniker
Book hangovers are the worst! I finished Heartless by Marissa Meyer the other day and I’m still trying to process everything. The characters, the world building, the plot, everything. I originally bought this because the cover is gorgeous underneath the book jacket. It is by far the best cover I have ever seen on a book!! I mean, just check out the black and red checkerboard with a crown for the king on the front. The same pattern appears on the back, but instead of a crown for the king, it’s a joker’s hat.
This is my first Marissa Meyer novel so I wasn’t sure what to expect. This is a prequel rather than a retelling of the famous story of Alice in Wonderland. The main character also happens to be one of the most awful and hated villains of all time: The Queen of Hearts. With that being said, Marissa Meyer blew me away. My appreciation for a classic grew. Seriously, if there were to be a prequel for Alice in Wonderland explaining who the Queen of Hearts was and how she came her, this would be it! It’s fantastic!
Cath is an easy girl to become friends with. She was kind, sweet, caring, and just simply wanted to be a baker and open her own shop alongside her maid, Margaret. I found myself feeling compassionate for her. She wants to marry for love, but her mother insists that she marry the king.
Now the king is a bubbling fool. For example, while the Jabberwock is busy terrorizing the people of Hearts, he would rather have a tea party and carry on like nothing is happening. He’s clingy, needy, and quite annoying. I sympathize with Cath for not wanting to marry him. To be honest, I’m still trying to figure why he even wanted to marry her. All we know that likes about her is her baking. Well, I guess they say that food is a way to a man’s heart. Hehe.
Then there’s is the joker, who just happens to be named Jest. This was cheesy and cute. Cath and Jest have a serious case of instalove which is typically annoying and not something I enjoy reading in books. However, I thought the romance was cute and sweet. Jest is myserious, charming, and magical. I wish I could tell you more about him, but I’m afraid that I’m going to accidentally let out a spoiler.
Even though this takes place in Hearts, it’s very Wonderland. We see glimpses from the original by Lewis Carroll which was really neat. I haven’t actually read the novel, but I have watched the Disney animation and many other film adaptations. I was impressed with this one because I usually don’t like many retellings for this story. There are also glimpses relating to the Tim Burton film adaptations which I thought was really interesting. This is a really hard world to combine and establish but somehow Marissa Meyer managed to do just that. We also see pieces of the “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe show up a lot. I loved that Raven represented this.
Now back to Wonderland. It was very Wonderland. The Chesire Cat, The Mad Hatter, The White Rabbit. They were all there playing very important roles in the story. It was brilliant!
Then there’s the writing. This is definitely geared for middle grade and young adults for the writing is very fairytale like and swoonworthy. It was perfect for this tale. The descriptions were brilliant. I felt like I was actually there in this fantasy world experiencing everything that the characters were experiencing. It was exciting getting to go to one of the Mad Hatter’s tea parties! Oh and the food. Don’t even get me started. The descriptions of the food will have you craving a taste. Now, there are some flaws that the author could have fixed to make the story flow better, but overall, it was enjoyable.
The characters are far from perfect. Cath, in particular, makes some really bad decisions that will make you wonder if she’s stupid. Since we already know the ending of this story this won’t be much of a spoiler. I didn’t want to see her become the Queen of Hearts! That was the hardest part for me. This book is an emotional rollercoaster.
I could go on and on telling you about how brilliant this book is, but then we’d be here all day and you’d never read the book. This book is brilliant.
Highly recommended for anyone and everyone!

Excellent New Novel From Marissa Meyer
By Amazon Customer
“One to be a murderer. One to be a Martyr. One to be a Monarch. One to go Mad.”
Let me just start by saying: read this NOW ! You won't regret it, even if you aren't the biggest fan of Alice in Wonderland. Marissa Meyer crafts an ingenious, fantastic story that takes you on a whirlwind adventure. You honestly never want to stop reading!! This was the first book I have read by Ms. Meye, but it certainly won't be my last. I have been meaning to check out her other novels, but Heartless is giving me the push I need to jump right into those others stories. There is a lot to love about this story, but warning...it'll make you pretty hungry for some baked goods while reading.
While I can't compare to previous books she has written, Marissa Meyer has achieved an excellently balanced story that is full of action, forbidden love, and that wonderfully weird essence of Wonderland. The beauty in this story is that you really don't need to enjoy the original story. You might say that's odd because why would you want to read a story set in the world of Alice when you dislike the original story? Well, let's put it this way...do you like strong characters, a unique plot, and a love for the slightly weird/nonsensical things in life? Then you're going to enjoy this novel! Obviously, there are ties to Wonderland and you never truly forget the setting while reading, but it is an incredibly original idea that just makes you lose yourself in the story.
“But hoping," he said, "is how the impossible can be possible after all.”
Catherine, our MC and resident baker, just wants to open her own bakery and live out her dreams. But that's a no go when she has to be the future bride to the King of Hearts. The one thing I loved about Cath is her characterization throughout the story. Ms. Meyer did an excellent job at this and made the book be fueled by Cath's anger and frustration at not being able to love who she wants to AND not being able to achieve her dreams. Her frustration is palpable, and the pages are filled to the brim with tension. I loved watching Cath descend into that fierce and ferocious woman we know as the Queen of Hearts, and honestly, I would entirely believe that this is her backstory.
“The easiest way to steal something, is for it to be given willingly.”
We have the requisite love interest...and boy did I fall for him! Every time he left, I was desperate for more scenes of him and Cath together. There was a interesting twist that I definitely didn't see coming with his character and his companion, and that just made the story even better for me. Some favorites are still in the story as well: the Cheshire Cat, the Jabberwock, the Mad Hatter, etc. It's important to note that every character has a very special role to play.
I would highly recommend checking out this novel if you have the chance because it is not one to miss! I was a little hesitant going in because stories that incorporate Alice in Wonderland can be pretty hit or miss for me, but Marissa Meyer did a phenomenal job and really won me over within a couple pages of her magnificent storytelling. With riddles, excitement, and treats that will leave your mouth watering, this book has it all and is a definite must read of 2017! And in the spirit of a Wonderlandian novel, I'll leave you with this:
“Why is a raven like a writing-desk?”
Happy reading :)
