About the Author

Jan Cohen-Cruz wrote Local Acts: Community-based Performance in the US, edited Radical Street Performance, and, with Mady Schutzman, co-edited Playing Boal: Theatre, Therapy, Activism. She is an associate professor at NYU where she teaches in the Drama and the Art and Public Policy Departments.

Mady Schutzman is author of The Real Thing: Performance, hysteria, and advertising, and co-editor, with Jan Cohen-Cruz, of Playing Boal: Theatre, therapy, activism. She teaches at California Institute of the Arts and is an advisory board member of L.A. Center for Theatre of the Oppressed.

Welcome to the Revolution Mike Lazaridis moves to the microphone with the

easy self-assurance of a successful inventor whose creation, BlackBerry, is as well known in the family room as the boardroom. As he looks out at the shareholders attending the July 2009 annual meeting of Research In Motion (RIM), he knows that he has a room full of happy investors. The market capitalization of the firm ? the number of shares times the per share value ? is $43 billion, making RIM three times bigger than Motorola, a major competitor founded in 1928, more than half a century before RIM’s brave beginnings in 1984 as a two-man shop on borrowed money. Share price has recovered to $75, more than double the levels reached during the global financial crisis that battered all companies six months earlier. At the peak of his powers, Lazaridis is one of thoserare people in business who rightly deserves to be called a genius. “It’s a privilege to work with experts every day,” he said, referring to RIM’s 12,000 employees, including 5,000 in research and development, up from a total of only 100 employees in 1997. “We knew we were building a company for the long term,” he said. “We’re just absolutely obsessed with customer quality, the reliability of the product, and the value we’re providing the carrier, the enterprise, the IT manager, and the user. You turn it on and it just works,” he said.The device works so well that the company sold 50 million BlackBerrys by January 2009, half of those in the previous year alone. BlackBerry commands a 55 per cent market share of the U.S. smartphone market, and a 21 per cent global market share, as Research In Motion increasingly becomes the first choice for the world. RIM has also become Canada’s most valuable tech company with annual revenues of more than $11 billion and annual growth of 84 per cent, a meteoric rate usually reserved for start-ups. In fact, Fortune Magazine ranked RIM at the top of its 2009 list of the 100 Fastest Growing Companies in the world and RIM’s ranking at the top of the 2009 “Tech 100” list published by Canadian Business magazine illustrated RIM’s tech titan status in Canada with a market cap that was actually more than double the combined value of the other 99 publicly traded Canadian technology companies on the list. And according to a Millward Brown brand study, the BlackBerry brand value grew 390 per cent in the past year and is now worth $28 billion, ranked as the sixteenth most valuable brand in the world and tenth in North America. How could a journalist with 30 years experience publish a book in 2010 that completed missed Blackberry's looming crisis?--not even a sniff of it? The last chapter dismisses Apple by basically saying that there is no company, not Microsoft, not Palm, not Apple, that has ever or will ever come close to killing Blackberry. Oops!

Overall, a decent read

I've always been fascinated with RIM; not sure why, it's perhaps due to a perception I have that RIM has depth, both from a technological and business standpoint. I've long stopped reading books that chronicles the rise of companies and have walked right past bookshelves that proclaim the arrival of new giants like Facebook and Twitter, but, RIM, of course, is different and I had to get it.

Now, the book is good and it starts well. It does give an 'inside story' about the company and does a fairly good job of providing an overview of the company right from pre-inception to where it stands towards the end of 2009; it covers the early business approach, the financing aspects and transitioning as a major player with the introduction of BlackBerry. However, towards the end it gets a little light and fluffy, if I may say so. I would have preferred to read more about the technological challenges RIM overcame (there are pieces here and there such as the single mail box problem, Show Low project) and a bit more about how they successfully navigated the market with all those big guys around. Personally I would have preferred the last few chapters compressed into fewer pages; for example, I mean, I wasn't really that interested in knowing all the specific charity contributions of the early team members; so instead of enumerating that it would've been better if something else had taken its place. But, in overall, it does give you a picture about how RIM became what it is today. If you are part of the Black Berry cult you might like it more since there is a lot of emphasis on the personalities.

PS - Einstein's notion of God is a bit different... "I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."..."I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings."
I'm not expressing an opinion one way or the other here, but the author has tried to draw a parallel between Mike's faith and Einstein's thoughts about reality

These works are characterized by a certain self-reflexivity, a determination to foreground the process of artistic creation, and the previously often backgrounded role played by the artist. Linda Hutcheon's groundbreaking exploration of postmodernism in Canadian fiction, first published in 1988, provides a clear and fascinating explanation of this tendency towards self-consciousness and self-parody in many of the novels of this period. Nearly perfect!

This was an interesting book - in all facets, really - a neat structure, fascinating premise, surprising twists and turns to the plot... the only thing really lacking were the characters. Not anything terribly specific, but... I guess they seemed more like characters from a film than from a book. They were a bit two-dimensional, which is odd considering the book is labeled as "psychological thriller." Some actions were rather unbelievable. I do think it would make a good movie, though - perhaps even better than the book. There was just something film-like about reading the book. Maybe because some actors jumped to mind as being perfect to play parts (e.g., Judi Dench as Vivienne). It was a solid story and quite entertaining and if only the characters had that certain je ne sais quoi, I would have truly loved it.

Disappointing

The ingredients for a good psychological thriller are all there: Alice, the mother who's convinced that her newborn baby daughter Florence has been switched with another baby in her own home of all places. David, her husband, who's convinced his wife has gone mad with post-natal depression and refuses to even acknowledge Alice's doubts. Vivienne, David's mother, perfect organizer of his and Alice's lives, after the tragic murder of David's first wife, Laura, whom he had divorced some time before. Felix, David's and Laura's child, is now living with them all at The Elms, Vivienne's huge and stately home.
The alleged kidnapping/switch takes place at The Elms and the police get involved. This starts off a series of considerations for all involved, including the two police detectives assigned to this peculiar case, Simon and Charlie. Psycological twists & turns ensue, which also lead to the reopening of Laura's murder case, despite the confession of her killer, now serving a sentence. A gripping start.

Why the 2 stars then? I admit I was hooked from the very beginning of this book, which is written in two "voices": Alice's, self-describing her actions and anguish, whereas the rest of the characters and circumstances are reported as seen from the outside.

Up to a certain point, I would have given this book 4 stars. What disappointed me was that, upon approaching the end, I realised that the facts had not been fairly and truthfully presented from the beginning. True, one could still guess and make assumptions -after all, isn't that the... thrill of thrillers?- but in my opinion this book was deceiving for the way it started and ended. I could tell you in more detail what I refer to specifically, but that would give the story away. If you buy it, you'll find out.

Unsatisfying...

Admittedly, I flew through the first part of the book. I couldn't wait to figure out "whodunnit." Combine that with a very slow beginning and I was really anxious to get through the novel. Unfortunately, the ending is highly unsatisfying. SPOILERS I don't necessarily have anything against novels in which the narrator is unreliable. But this one was just too much for me. Completely unsatisfying ending. Someone mentioned that they skipped to the end to find out the "surprise ending" and then read the book through. That would probably be a more entertaining way to read the book, because then you'd more clearly see all the ways the narrator is unreliable and all the things she says that don't make sense if you don't know the ending. That and the so called "relationship" between Simon and Alice was quickly wrapped up in the end in an irksome, rushed, unfulfilling and unrealistic way.

I also don't like the literary device Hannah uses here-- a chapter or so of police procedural, and then a chapter or so of what happened with the victim. The two types of chapters don't start off at the same time period as each other, and then slowly they end up working their way to being on the same day/time. Reading the chapters this way can get confusing and annoying-- you don't even figure out the actual crime until you've read about five chapters in. It's hard to keep track of what happened before what and to remember what happened two chapters before.

And finally, a minor nitpick here-- lines like "Will our friendship be taken further?" (on the last page of the book) drive me crazy-- who talks like that in real life? Especially when Alice and Simon barely had a friendship to begin with?

In summary, while the book certainly makes you anticipate a surprise ending, it doesn't actually deliver, leaving the reader unsatisfied and, honestly, feeling like the time spent reading it could've been better spent. A mystery novel with some aspects of this book (suspense, unreliable storytelling) that's way better, check out The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It's a bit more of a "lit" book, but one of my favorites. I will probably read Hannah again, as I've heard good things about some of her other books.

Steve, We Hardly Knew Ye

Millions of words have been written about Steve Jobs and the birth of Apple Computer. By the time you finish this courageous and insightful memoir by Chrisann Brennan, you'll realize how little we actually knew about the man who more than any other pulled us into the era of personal tech. Brennan met him in high school, was his lover into their twenties, had a daughter by him, and, through that connection, remained part of his life until he died. This is her story of attempting first to love him, then to understand him, and, finally, to survive him.

The push and pull of their relationship is fascinating, and Brennan dives deeply into what attracted them and what kept them apart. In high school they were both outsiders, with a creative, new-age slant on the world. Together they took LSD, stayed on an alternative farm, sat zazen. Separately, both took a spiritual pilgrimage to India. But underneath it all lay a primal power struggle. Jobs defined himself by his ability to manipulate and persuade others to do his bidding. Chrisann was less verbal and charismatic, but even when overwhelmed by Jobs, held on to a stubborn core of self she wasn't willing to surrender. His power threatening to subsume her identity: at one level this is a classic tale of feminist struggle.

A large part of the book is taken up with Jobs at first denying paternity for their daughter Lisa, and then being forced through DNA testing to acknowledge her. His conduct toward Brennan and Lisa was shameful, and Brennan suffered from it, both financially and emotionally. Although the behavior got better over time, the scars remained. Still, she stays remarkably even handed throughout, acknowledging Jobs intermittent generosity and genuine attempts to be part of Lisa's life while not glossing over his boorish and selfish behaviors.

Brennan has carefully and thoroughly separated the many layers that made up his character, beginning with the trauma of being abandoned by his birth mother and the initially hesitant embrace of his adoptive parents. She is witness to his fierce, observing intelligence as he is formulating his views of the world and his place in it. We see the profound effect of Kobun, his zen master, along with Job's lifelong attraction to the clarity, simplicity and casuistry derived from zen teachings. Chrisann gets bruised by his boundless ambition and the emotional voids that led all too frequently to abusive or amoral behavior.

Among his many talents, Jobs was a master marketer of his and Apple's image. Brennan has taken a lot of lumps over the years from people who had a stake in burnishing the myth of Steve Jobs. She may take even more once this book is published. But she was there at the beginning. She bore witness, was damaged, and endured. This is a brave book, full of striking insights. It reveals a much more equivocal tale of inventive genius than the recent biographies and movies about Jobs have described. Through her insights into Jobs and his time, she helps us understand the strange brew of spiritualism, idealism, materialism, hucksterism and self-absorption that propelled us into the modern age of personal technology.

Authentic, No Holds Barred, Personal Narrative

This is not a book for the casually interested. This is a deep book. A book true to its topic. It's about a relationship that spanned several decades. A love story. A story of the culture of the 70s that Steve Jobs emerged from. A story of the personal demons behind one of the greatest business men/artists/revolutionaries who ever lived.

If you're reading this book because you're primarily a technologist, a huge Steve Jobs fan, an admirer of his business accomplishments, or want a tell-all of his whole life story you're likely to be sorely disappointed. Read the Isaacson biography.

This is a personal narrative. It's for people who are interested in a deep study of his character - him as the whole human - the same people that may pick up an obscure book like Mona Simpson's A Regular Guy or John Sculley's From Pepsi to Apple. If you have never heard of those two people nor those two books then this book is probably not for you.

With that in mind - if you are such a deep student of Steve Jobs character then you will find this book rewarding. There is new information about his teen years and 80s personal life that has not been revealed in any previous mass market book, film, or interview to my knowledge (and I've read/seen just about all of them).

What I liked best about this book, other than the SJ insights, and also what it seems other reviewers found frustrating is the authenticity of the narrative. Chrisann tells her story with her voice. She's hippyish and crunchy, but also insightful and incredibly descriptive in a succinct, good way. I rationalize that she must have kept a diary, because her memories come off so vividly from the page.

If you want to understand the culture that Steve Jobs immersed himself in just prior to launching Apple, there is no better book. And if you want some new insights into Steve Jobs the person from someone who knew him intimately and you don't mind some love stories, teenage angst, and family squabbles then you will love this book. But again this is a deep cut - a book only for those very very interested in the field of Steve Jobs Studies.

PS I also learned a lot about the culture of the 70s alternative movement - I even felt transported back into another time and place during some pages. Two small critiques are some typos/grammatical mistakes and that higher quality photographs could've been chosen for the book center.

Finally, some questions answered

Steve Jobs was known for more than his share of personality contradictions. A brilliant innovator who could be a mean and spiteful leader. A sleek thinker with a messy jumble of psychological and emotional needs running below the surface. Chrisann Brennan is the first woman close to Jobs to write about him, and she brings an entirely new facet of understanding to his life. She has mercifully avoided the objective litany of "And then Steve did..." in favor of the WHY he did it. She loved Steve Jobs, honors his contributions to our culture but also questions some of the costs-- both to all of us and to her, personally. As the father of her only child, Jobs remained in her life long after the loving relationship between them deteriorated. While he treated her badly, she continued to put their daughter first through many rough years. She took menial jobs and struggled to become a working artist. In this quirky, lyrical book, the atmosphere and sensibilities of their early life together are captured astonishingly well. But don't be fooled by the 70s setting and language. As someone who was there at the beginning of the computer boon Brennan brings a unique view not of the technology per se-- which she admits to knowing little about-- but to how it started and the way it changed our world. This is a perfect book club book, instigating meaty discussions on deeper topics. To name just a few: the delicate power balance between men and women, the complicated emotional dynamics set in motion through adoption, the trade-offs we make as our lives become more and more fragmented by technology. For many years, Brennan stayed silent in the wake of the `great man's' increasingly powerful influence. By deciding to share her experiences, we finally have a new window on to the man he really was.
