Tonic

Much needed corrective to the overhyped and overblown theories about Blitzkrieg. As brilliant as the German operational plan was, Colonel Doughty does a remarkable job in showing that only hard fighting by well-trained infantry and engineers at the sharp end allowed the plan to bear fruit. A great cautionary script for anyone tempted to put all their eggs in either the maneuver or firepower baskets exclusively.

Get It!

Doughty knows considerably more about the workings of the French Army in 1940 than does the average historian and this knowledge is reflected in this work. Take your normal account of the fall of France, and then examine each significant event from the perspective of both the German and the French commands and then you will have some idea of what this work offers. I suggest that no serious student of WWII can do without this book. Stackpole's republishing it at a price that is actually within reason makes it even harder to resist.

Colonel Doughty has gone where no one has before; the company-size struggle for the Marfee Heights. While E. Store's 1PZ gives a good timeline and points of reference, Doughty describes each block- house. The French officers are named, either in their infamy or heroic efforts.
On a broader scale, Doughty compares doctrines. "Combat-activness" is examined as a motivator in small-level combat; the place that wars are really won.

I can not relate to being Hispanic or male but Arts story is one that is a page-turner. From the very first paragraph, I was intrigued and found it hard to put the book down. I just wanted to keep turning the pages to find out what happened next. What I can relate to is being young and wanting to fit in and be accepted. Some of us make choices that take us down the wrong path but with the help of God, we find our way back to the main road. That is Arts story. I sure hope you order "The Monkey Box" and enjoy it. When I wrote my first book, East Side Dreams, I wondered what I was going to write next. I didn't know if people would enjoy reading about my family story. One day I started writing it as a love story. I really enjoyed it and kept right on going. Those who read "The Monkey Box" have let me know that they really enjoyed it. It is a very romantic story. Some can not believe for the tough guy that I am that I could write something so romantic, but I did! In "The Monkey Box" story, some of my great grandfather, Chico's thinking and feelings are what I feel inside. Also, many of my grandfather, Romulo's ways are my ways, not all though.

My grandfather, Romulo, died in 1937. Last year before I finalized "The Monkey Box", I went to Chiapas, Mexico to see my family and to confirm what I had written to be true. I have an uncle who is in his 80's. I went to see him and his wife in Chiapas. When I knocked on his door, the maid let me in because they had heard I was in town. My Uncle was sitting on his chair out on the back patio. I walked up to him and greeted, "Tio (Uncle)!" He turned and looked up at me and became a little startled, and asked, "Romulo?" He thought I was my grandfather. I answered, "No, Tio, it is I, Arturo." He replied, "Arturo! You look just like Romulo now!" They had not seen me for a few years. Then his wife stepped into the room, looked at me and said, "Romulo!" Her husband said, "No, my love, it is Arturo!" I gave a little laugh and they both looked at each other and said, "He even laughs like Romulo!" I think the genes came out in me.

I asked my uncle things about Romulo's life to see if they were the same stories that were handed down to me. He went on to tell me the same stories I was told. He said he was a young boy during that time but knew of the stories because his side of the family told them to him.

There is a letter that Romulo gave to my father dated 1937 telling my father nice things about what he had to do in his life and getting an education. At that time my grandfather was 64 years old and suffering from diabetes for a few years already. He died that year. My father was in boarding school in another town. My father was 16 years old. I have the original letter in Spanish. It is a very poetic letter. My grandfather was a doctor in that small town.

Growing up in San Jose, California, Arturo Rodriguez and his brothers and sister endured an abusive father, their parents' unhappy marriage, and their father's absence after he returned to Mexico. Rodriguez coped as best he could, but his drinking and drug use, in the wrong place at the wrong times led to his incarceration in California's prison system for young offenders. Against all odds, he put his past behind him, married and had a family, and worked hard to overcome injustices and start a successful business. After his retirement Rodriguez began writing about his life and his family. This book is sequel to East Side Dreams (Dream House, 2001, published in Spanish as Sue�os del Lado Este. In this second autobiographical book, he writes about childhood pranks and misdeeds, his mother's near fatal illness, his parent's divorce, the birth of his first child, and how his parents even eventually became friends.
The writing here is unpolished but sincere in true, and the reminiscences and descriptions are vivid and true to life. Neither how he grew to understand his father and other relatives whom he loved despite their flaws. His message for young readers is clear. It is possible to survived and overcome injustices and hardships. Yes, the nucleus is organized and structured just like the atom itself is. This book offers all the physics and mathematics. It's not a book to read, but for study or reference. Very in-depth and it says it all. I didn't rate it 5-stars though, because I really miss schema's, drawings, pictures etc. to present graphically what is now only presented through formula. A picture says more than a thousand words.

Great Text for an upper-division course

Tipton does an excellent job of writing a compact and yet informative text on Modern Japan. Especially helpful are the many references to scholarship which go into greater detail on specific topics. Not content to bury researchers in the endnotes, Tipton allows the reader easy access to much of the historiography as well as the history. Routledge, as usual, overprices the book, but the quality is outstanding and worth the cost.

Overcoming grief and preserving love

This is the second book I read by Traci Sanders, and I must admit this is what drew me to it - the interesting title, a most romantic cover (I am not one to read much romance, but sometimes we all need it), and the hint of paranormal. But the book surprised me. It is far from your typical romance.

The author tells the story in the first person, which allows the telling to flow in an even, nostalgic style, much like a diary or a personal confession. The opening passage sets a sad and melancholic, almost poetic, tone and grabs the reader's attention. The author paints a lovely picture of a couple in love, the insatiable passion of the early stages of their relationship, the buds of an understanding marriage, all cut short too soon when he dies in action, leaving his young wife an army widow.

The paranormal aspect of the story is unusual for a romance book, although my mind couldn't help but wander to the movie Ghost, and smile with melancholy. Grief at the loss of a partner must be very difficult to handle, and we all handle grief in different ways. The author delivers the romantic part of the story as past memories (nicely done through sounds, photos and scents), and the grieving and living is told in the present. The melancholy and sadness show in every line -- such as 'Tonight I feel alone, even surrounded by my closest friends and family.'

As tragedy occurs early on in the story, the true hook and challenge lie in you wondering 'so what happens next'. This is where you realize this is not actually a typical romance, and the paranormal element will not guide you into an eerie horror-like direction, but blends into the story as naturally as the pain. The romantic and family moments are written stronger than the paranormal and erotic, but the author lovingly brings her heroine full circle in life, offering hope and consolation to readers. I have to admit, although romance is not my favourite go-to genre, the story lured me in. I will avoid any spoilers, but let me just say the end of chapter 4 is a real cliffhanger.

Unsevered is a story about a woman going through all the stages of dealing with grief - shock, denial, fantasies (or not;)?), acceptance (packing his things is a touching detail) and trying to get on with her life. She is a woman, a writer, a widow, a friend, a daughter, and more. As the story progresses, her character develops, especially from the second half of the book and the turning point. Here are some of my favourite moments... 'I get back in my car and feel Harley’s dog tags between my fingers for a moment. Then I plant a soft kiss on them and head home.'
'...it’s the little things I miss the most.'

Grief is a lonely process, but nobody should go through it alone, and it's the little things that help us survive. Life goes on, and we should cherish our memories.

A beautiful story

A beautiful story of a young couple who falls and hard and builds their life together on that passion. It's a story of sadness, loss, and the craziness that follows. Grief does incredibly intense things to your emotions and to your reality, and the scenes in this book are totally believable by someone who has experienced that kind of loss.

The maturing of one's heart and soul, the moving forward and outward that the main character does in this book is true of most people, but was shown rather elegantly. Sometimes you can't fight the changes that happen in life and it's best for your personal growth to accept them and learn from them. Moving forward is never easy, and can take longer than expected. But miracles can and do spring from tragedies.

This book is very sad in several parts, and tears are definitely going to flow. The sum of the book was short and sometimes the telling felt a bit rushed, but overall was an incredible story.

This romance, Unsevered, is a beautiful story of Jewel and her love and dedication to Harley who experiences an early and untimely death. Jewel's baby is born and her family and friends provide tremendous support for Jewel. The author does an excellent job of engaging the reader as we experience the milestones of her son, James. Jewel eventually meets her son's kindergarten teacher, Patrick. The sparks begin to fly, but is Jewel ready for a new romance or are the memories of Harley still front and center? Don't touch that dial. The words flow so smoothly that I'm hypnotized and hopeful that the story won't end. It's compelling and it tugs at my emotions! I would highly recommend this romance novel!
