And Update of a Favorite System

Savage Worlds Deluxe edition is a cleaned up and expanded version of the 10-dollar Savage Worlds Explorer Edition (SWEX)

A few highlights:

1. The chase rules have been changed, providing more abstract results. While I've only used the new chase rules a couple of times, I've found that they bring fast and exciting results.

2. "Guts" is no longer a skill -- except in certain settings. Rather, a simple Spirit check is called for when things get scary. The previous rules made PCs without the Guts skill cowards.

3. Pinnacle has introduced rules for "interludes" with the new edition. Simply put, this is an opportunity for a player to earn a benny and expand (or share) his character's back stories during in-game downtime. Say the party is crossing the Atlantic and will be ship-bound for weeks. The GM could take this time to allow a player an interlude. It's not much of a mechanical change to the rules, but it's a rule that definitely encourages role-playing and allows players to really flesh out their characters.

There are a few new one-sheet adventures in the back of the book, as well as expanded rules on powers.

Personally, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book when it was released, and I strongly recommend it.

That said, there are SWEX owners who are on a tight budget, and for those folks Pinnacle has included all the rules changes from the Deluxe edition on their web page for free, so you don't NEED to buy the new edition.

And just generally speaking about the Savage Worlds system: SW is a very fun and flexible system. It is fairly easy to teach newcomers the ropes, and it's my go-to system for game conventions. The system is definitely built around making the Player Characters heroic, with the benny system and the exploding dice mechanic.

If you're looking for a gritty, realistic game, SW as written is NOT it. But if you're looking for a game of heroics, where the PCs regularly pluck victory from the jaws of defeat, you should give Savage Worlds a try.

Great System for People with Lives

I GMed Pathfinder for a group of college guys and a gal until they gained ninth level, after which I became a little disenchanted with the constant rules-digging. As none of us felt inclined toward DnD 4.0, we picked this up, and I have become totally sold on it.

As a GM, what I ESPECIALLY appreciate:
+Making NPCs or creatures is a breeze, allowing for much more time spent on the plot, cool settings, etc.

+The system is elegantly simple, and can easily accommodate any genre or action. (My players prefer it for all genres except medieval fantasy, but acknowledge it does fine there, too; they just prefer Pathfinder for that, and are psyched to be playtesting DnD Next.)

+Players aren't pigeon-holed into classes, but can choose to follow an archetype if they desire. (Oddly, some of my players DO like Pathfinder's/DnD's forced specialization.) With Savage Worlds, there's also such freedom in designing characters to fit a particular protagonist from books or movies, and anyone can be meaningful, which is emphatically FALSE for many other systems.

+Anyone can die quickly. Granted, this isn't what all players are looking for, but I find that this keeps players grounded and exploring options other than combat (or at least, mindless whacking) when things get dicey. They actually consider ducking and employing sound tactics from time to time!

+The game is designed to be kept flowing without too much prep before OR paperwork during the game session. I love not having to keep track of hit points or many different short-term effects. This aspect has freed me up to enjoy the game as much as my players. (Admittedly, some of my players HATE not having hit points; it frustrates them to score an apparently-solid hit, only to find that that hit only skids off armor or traces a scratch down a villain's thigh. They accept it, but enjoy bemoaning the situation.)

+On-line support is without peer.

Long and short, I haven't found a system that better combines cross-genre playability, adaptability, efficiency, and sheer enjoyment, nor one that comes close.

LOVE MACHINE still a blcokbuster

Thanks to Grove-Atlantic Press, the novels of Jacqueline Susann are reappearing in print 15 years after the mass market Bantam editions went out of print. VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is still, after 30 years, the all-time bestselling novel of all time.Those expecting a weak sophmore effort in LOVE MACHINE will be glad to hear that her second novel is actually the best-written of all her novels. This insiders view of the television industry (and specifically the rise of womanizing heel, TV anchorman Robin Stone) is a riveting, compelling and compulsively-readable tale that benefits from Susann's real-life background as a TV spokesmodel and actress who was married to a TV producer.If you thought the showbiz folk in VALLEY were ruthless, wait until you get swallowed up by the cast of characters in LOVE MACHINE. There's also much more plot in LOVE than in VALLEY. This is no romance novel, Jacqueline Susann wrote anti-romance novels. She liked to show readers the exciting and torrid lives of the rich and famous and always made readers feel they were better off living in the midwest than starring in a Broadway show or hosting a network news show. The reissued VALLEY had a quaint feeling of once being a very blunt and racy novel that had mellowed over the years (probably due to it being the blueprint for countless bestsellers over the next three decades). But, THE LOVE MACHINE still packs a powerful punch. This is Jackie Susann at her most assured, writing the kind of story that is hard to resist and shouldn't be resisted.

"Mutter...Mother...MOTHER!"

There are two major things that distinguish "The Love Machine" from Jacqueline Susann's other novels: the main character is a man, and the book has a happy ending (at least in my opinion).

This book is a very entertaining read. The story centers around Robin Stone, a smart and sexy television executive who's climbing the corporate ladder and breaking the hearts of many women along the way. Although it seems at times that Robin has no conscience because of the way he treats women, he really isn't a malicious character and doesn't intend to harm to anyone. Regardless of the fact that he always makes it clear that he's not interested in a long-term relationship, women still tend to fall for him, and they fall very hard. The book is divided into three main sections devoted to the women who are affected by Robin the most: Amanda, a beautiful and emotional model; Maggie, a brilliant journalist; and Judith, a middle-aged socialite.

Robin is a very interesting character. He's so charismatic that he even manages to charm the reader, and you'll be rooting for him in spite of all his indiscretions. There is also a deeply buried secret in Robin's past that makes him become vulnerable in very unexpected circumstances, and the mystery surrounding him will keep the reader guessing until the very end. I also enjoyed how Robin interacted differently with all the various women in his life. The last section in the book devoted to Judith was a little slow, but that could be because I was expecting a last-minute dramatic turn of events like I've seen in Susann's other novels, and this book was a little different.

If you enjoyed Jacqueline Susann's other novels, you really need to read "The Love Machine." My only disappointment is that this was the last book of Susann's I had left to read...I wish she had written many more!

Oh how I loved this book!

I didn't know if Jacqueline Susann could live up to "Valley of the Dolls" with this book, but she sure did! "Once is Not Enough" is thoroughly entertaining. The story revolves around January Wayne, a tragic heroine who has an unnatural adoration for her father and is unable to have a successful relationship with another man because of it. When her father marries a wealthy woman to secure his family's financial future, January finally falls in love. Unfortunately for her, the man she falls for is Tom Colt, a married man who is older than her father. Tom replaces "Daddy" for January, but it's only a matter of time before the relationship drags her down into the drug-induced haze that every Susann heroine eventually falls victim to.

Like "Valley of the Dolls," "Once is Not Enough" boasts many colorful characters whose lives intersect in a variety of unexpected ways. There are some funny moments in the book, but for the most part it consists of tragedy and unhappiness. The final few chapters threw me for a loop because the ending is more depressing than either of Susann's other novels. Still, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining read. You won't be able to put it down!
