I am a K-6 literacy specialist in an urban school district, this is the ONLY phonics program I have used that is suitable for all grades/ages and stages of development. It is perfect for systematic implementation as well as for responsive teaching to address individual skills gaps. I have had great success with it in my intervention program and my students love it!
I have also introduced it to the general education teachers I coach. They have added to their guided reading programs with tremendous success as it is a complete resource for phonics instruction that compliments any balanced literacy program. They too use it in a systematic manner as well as responsively to differentiate reading instruction for their students.

She did great until first grade when she started to fall behind ...

I am a mother of two and work full time. My daughter was granted early admission to kindergarten at age 4. She did great until first grade when she started to fall behind academically. She did great with math -- it was reading that challenged her. The school offered a program that pulled her out of the classroom for an hour everyday, and she was making progress, just not the pace I would expect. I contacted Pat directly to make sure it was the right fit and purchased the book. I followed the steps and my daughter tested out of the reading program within a month. The book is easy to follow and helped me accomplish my goal of inspiring confidence in reading for my daughter.

Trader Vic

Wow. This is THE book to have for anyone thinking about a retro-south seas type party. This is a real collectors item for anyone who loves cookbooks. Vic's style is a little rough (language-wise anyway, only because he's a real man's man) but the advice is sound and timeless. This little glimpse into post-war Americana is excellent in all respects. It stays on the mantle, proudly displayed, anytime I'm not using it.

Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!

A fun, educational read. About 100 pages of recipes & info in the Booze section. Lots of rum drinks because that is what Trader Vic is famous for. However, these drinks contain lots more than just rum, so make sure your liquor cabinet is full. He also talks about: a feast in Tahiti, a Luau on the mainland & a Chinese Dinner in the Trader Vic manner. Cocktail parties, miscellaneous recipes, barbecuing, rice & what to do with it and a word about parties( or the last charge). He's into food, fun & entertaining! The book has 272 pages in total. This is the 1946 edition.

More than just a book on food and drink

This is the classic gentleman's book of food and drink by one of America's finest hosts. It's all about parties with a traditional island flair.

The book is worth the price just for the Fish House punch recipie and discussion.

Lots of wonderful appetizers and such along with instructions on making and serving a wide variety of drinks, stocking the liquor cabinet etc

This is the original and brings to life a wonderful gneration of post WWII entertainment

Note that some of the ingredients have changed over the years Ron Mierto run is long gone so a substitute of another quality light brown rum is in order.

A caution too - this book was writtien when there was a lot higher tolerance of challenged driving. Some of the drinks are best shared with those who will be spending the night.

Architecture, Landscape, and Community as One

I just attended a lecture by Mackay at the San Antonio Museum of Art (18 Nov 15). It was fascinating. He advocates using “Place, Craft, and Community” as the foundational elements of design, which he calls the “local vernacular.” Basically, this means that he considers the geology, materials and building techniques, and aesthetic customs of the regional area. Because of this, he is considered a “regionalist” architect, which is not really accurate because he argues that this approach is applicable anywhere in the world. He presented a myriad of examples of his work around the world demonstrating how this approach yielded structures that fit into their surroundings like beautifully crafted pieces of art. The book is primarily a collection of essays from like-minded architects associated with the Ghost Architectural Laboratory. I am not an architect, but I enjoyed these essays as my introduction into Mackay's process.

Unlike some opening books, the author has shied away from the extensive (excessive?) use of game segments. He has preferred a balance between the latest ideas, classic themes and practical middlegame play. Naturally the key theoretical aspects are highlighted, but he also looks at important moments whenever they occur. There are encounters from just a few months ago, but Sveshnikov often resorts to the use of classic games to illustrate themes. (Grandmaster Glenn Flear, author of Starting Out: Open Games)

Sound repertoire, but you'll need to do more work.

Sveshnikov's approach to opening books - for example in his works on the 2 c3 Sicilian and Advance French - is idiosyncratic, relying on the analysis of a large number of games rather than concrete opening variations. In this way the reader learns to understand the openings, and consequently those volumes will stand the test of time. He adopts a similar approach here but doesn't achieve quite the same the same effect. This is possibly because there are a large number of anti-Sicilians, each with their own positional themes. Perhaps it is also because the author's great analytical contribution is to the above to openings plus of course the Sicilian Sveshnikov, and he has less to say about the anti-Sicilians.

Nonetheless, the repertoire presented is reliable and "main-line", with the exception of the 2.c3 Sicilian where he recommends a sub-line as an alternative to the main lines presented in his 2 c3 book. He doesn't cover the Rossolimo/Moscow complex, which is one of the two key anti-Sicilians (but then neither did Richard Palliser in "Fighting the anti-Sicilians").

I suspect you will need to do quite a bit of extra work with the help of databases and engines, and I am sure Evgeny would say "that's what you should be doing!"

The book is good, it offers simple and effective lines and it is well analyzed, I did not find any serious tactical mistake. The problem is the Rossolimo variation, which is not covered in this book, it will be analyzed later according to Sveshnikov.
