The fairy tales collected by the brothers Grimm are among the best known and most widely-read stories in western literature. Luminous Work

I have always loved fairytales, but this beautiful book has greatly increased my respect for Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm as artists. I knew that their intention was to preserve fragments of authentic German culture, but had no idea how much of their own vision had gone into these versions of European folktales. Their unique way of combining their devout Christianity with the ancient Germanic pagan religion is fascinating! I'm interested in not only rereading these tales but in seeing more from this author.

Nice Education on the Grimm Bro's

Interesting book. Its good to know and be clear on how the Grimm brothers Christianized pre-Christian/pagan(?) Irish and Germanic fairy tales. This helps with symbolic "interpretation". No surprise that the author would want to give the tails a Christian slant since he is a Jesuit priest. Nice piece of work. I am interested in the old pre-christianized (pre-Grimm) symbolisms. I really think the original tails may have been attached to sky-constellation myths/stories. Even mention of a female character in a tree jumping from branch to branch--sounded more like a tree of life, working the kabbalah, jewish symbolism...? Nice historic information on how some of these fairy tails go back to ancient Greece and even Egypt. Whenever I hear the number symbolism of the 7's and 12's, my mind goes right to the 12 signs of the zodiac and the 7 "planets" know in older times. Can Noah's "Ark" be the sun traversing through the deep blue (sky) waters of the celestial zoo-diac? Or Noah's Ark being the arc of the heavens upon which the zodiac is written...The Grimm brothers and the author are Christianizing pagan myths- which would be of more value if they were kept pagan. The original symbolism is then clouded and lost, as is our clear perception of the ancient past. The colors of light on the chimneys, for instance was changed. The author included an Appendix C which inspired me to seek out his book on the subject; Yggdrasil. The owl, the raven and the dove...I feel something is still missing about this symbolism. I feel the meanings of these fairy tails are more cosmic. Probably ancient astronomical. Stories written in the stars. My copy is hardback. Worth the read.
